A federal grand jury has indicted Enrique Gonzalez Jacobo, a 59-year-old Mexican national, on charges of attempting to possess methamphetamine with intent to distribute and illegal reentry into the United States. Acting United States Attorney Kenneth M. Sorenson announced the indictment in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Gonzalez Jacobo has been deported to Mexico at least four times and has three prior felony convictions for drug trafficking. In July 2024, he was found in Hilo, Hawaii, after being removed from the U.S., and was arrested while allegedly trying to obtain a package containing over five pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside a stuffed animal.

If convicted, Gonzalez Jacobo could face life imprisonment, with a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years and a fine up to $10 million. The indictment's charges are accusations, and Gonzalez Jacobo is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court. Any sentence would be determined by a U.S. District Judge based on statutory factors and sentencing guidelines.

The case is under investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Nakamura.
