Foreign national pleads guilty to firearm possession charge

Salvador Diaz-Hermosillo, a 38-year-old foreign national, has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm in the United States. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced that Diaz-Hermosillo admitted to one count of being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm.

Diaz-Hermosillo was charged with knowingly possessing a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle while being unlawfully present in the country. Investigators discovered the firearm during his arrest by the Sallisaw Police Department for driving under the influence.

Federal law prohibits illegal aliens from owning firearms or ammunition under Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(5).

The case resulted from an investigation involving Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Sallisaw Police Department.

Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White accepted Diaz-Hermosillo's plea and ordered a presentence investigation report. Until sentencing, Diaz-Hermosillo will remain in custody under the United States Marshals Service.
