Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson announced that a federal grand jury in Montgomery, Alabama, has indicted three individuals from Troy, Alabama. The indictment alleges their involvement in a scheme to defraud the United States government.
The individuals charged are 50-year-old Brundidge Police Chief Samuel Cornelius Green, 53-year-old Sharon Jones Green, and 40-year-old Schemillia Levera Fenn. They face federal charges for allegedly conspiring to fraudulently obtain funds through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program. This program was created by Congress with up to $46 billion available to help households struggling with rent or utilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic's financial impact. The alleged conspiracy is said to have occurred from March 2, 2021, through at least November 9, 2021.
Samuel Green faces 13 counts in the indictment. These include one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering; three counts of money laundering; one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud; six counts of wire fraud; and two counts of aggravated identity theft. Sharon Green is charged with nine counts: one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering; three counts of money laundering; one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud; three counts of wire fraud; and one count of aggravated identity theft. Schemillia Fenn is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Davidson emphasized that "an indictment is merely an allegation" and that "all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law."
