Sikeston man sentenced to 10 years for fentanyl distribution

Steven K. Townsend, a 33-year-old resident of Sikeston, Missouri, has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl. The sentencing was announced by the United States Attorney's Office and took place on Friday.

During his guilty plea hearing in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau last year, Townsend confessed to selling fentanyl to an individual in Sikeston in July 2023. The buyer was an informant working with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), unbeknownst to Townsend at the time of the sale. Court documents reveal that Townsend was under parole supervision for a previous drug trafficking conviction when he committed this offense.

Following his prison term, Townsend will be subject to three years of supervised release. The case was investigated by both the DEA and the Sikeston Department of Public Safety and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Koester.
