A Pittsburgh man has been sentenced to over nine years in federal prison for a series of bank robberies, as announced by Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti. Rashon Coleman, 31, from the East Liberty neighborhood, received a sentence of 110 months imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Marilyn J. Horan.
The court heard that on April 10, 2023, Coleman entered a bank with what appeared to be a gun and demanded $50,000. He left with approximately $904. The next day, he robbed another nearby bank, threatening employees and demanding more money after receiving an initial amount. He fled with around $4,344.
Police officers responding to the robbery alarm found Coleman nearby with a toy gun and cash. He confessed to both robberies and was charged in Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. Initially granted alternative housing at a community detention facility, Coleman failed to return after being allowed temporary leave on May 20, 2023.
That same day, he committed another robbery at the first bank he had targeted in April. This time he escaped with over $25,000 but was soon apprehended by police inside a nearby store.
Assistant United States Attorney Carl J. Spindler handled the prosecution. Acting U.S. Attorney Rivetti praised the efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for their work leading to Coleman's conviction.
