The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania has announced charges against two Hazleton men, Cesar Altagracia Mateo Lara and Luis Mercado-Alicea, for drug trafficking. The indictment alleges that between November 2024 and February 2025, the defendants conspired to distribute over 40 grams of fentanyl.
Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that the defendants are accused of distributing fentanyl and possessing it with intent to distribute during this period.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office, and Hazleton Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenny P. Roberts is handling the prosecution.
This case forms part of a district-wide initiative led by the United States Attorney’s Office to address heroin use and distribution in Pennsylvania's Middle District. It is also part of Operation Take Back America, a national effort by the Department of Justice aimed at eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
Under federal law, those convicted face up to 40 years in prison, supervised release post-imprisonment, and fines. Sentences are determined by a judge considering federal statutes and guidelines.
It is important to note that indictments are allegations; all individuals charged remain innocent until proven guilty in court.
