Honduran national sentenced to nearly four years for illegal reentry

ALVARO LUIS ALCERRO-BANEGAS, a 39-year-old Honduran national, has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for reentering the United States after being deported. The sentence was handed down on March 18, 2025, by United States District Court Judge Brandon S. Long, as announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson.

Court documents reveal that ALCERRO-BANEGAS reentered the country after his previous deportation on September 2, 2022. His presence came to the attention of Immigration and Customs Enforcement following his arrest by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office on March 2, 2024. Previously, he had been convicted of illegal re-entry after deportation by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida on January 18, 2017, which resulted in an 18-month federal prison sentence.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson acknowledged the efforts of both the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in investigating this case. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carter K.D. Guice, Jr., from the General Crimes Unit.
