Chatham County man sentenced to 20 years for violent grocery store robbery

A Chatham County man has been sentenced to federal prison following a violent robbery incident that left two individuals injured. Jordan Richardson, 25, from Savannah, received a 240-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to several charges including Interference with Commerce by Robbery and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The sentencing was announced by Tara M. Lyons, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge R. Stan Baker also mandated Richardson to pay $23,793 in restitution and serve five years of supervised release after his prison term concludes. There is no possibility of parole in the federal system.

“Jordan Richardson wounded two people during his brief but violent criminal outburst,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Lyons, emphasizing the importance of preventing prohibited individuals from possessing firearms.

Court documents reveal that in July 2022, Richardson attempted to rob an employee outside Jones Red and White Food Store on Ogeechee Road in Savannah as they exited with a cash deposit. Armed with a pistol, Richardson fired at the employee who drove away but pursued them and continued shooting at their vehicle at an intersection, injuring both the employee and another nearby worker before fleeing with the deposit bag.

Richardson was apprehended days later by Savannah police officers after a vehicle chase that resulted in collisions with two patrol cars. Investigators recovered the Glock pistol used during the robbery and shootings.

At the time of this offense, Richardson was on probation for previous state convictions involving robbery and gun possession; his probation was revoked post-arrest leading to custody under Georgia Department of Corrections pending federal sentencing.

Paul Brown, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta remarked on Richardson's actions: “The blatant violence Richardson committed against these store employees followed by complete disregard for public safety...is completely reprehensible.” He praised collaboration efforts stating: “The FBI is proud to work with our local partners.”

Savannah Chief of Police Lenny B. Gunther commended those involved: “I am extremely proud of our officers, investigators, and our federal partners...Mr. Richardson is being held accountable for his actions.”

This case was investigated collaboratively by Savannah Police Department alongside FBI agents while prosecution duties were handled by Southern District of Georgia Special Assistant U.S Attorney Makeia R Jonese together with Assistant U.S Attorney Bradley R Thompson.
