U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken Gedion Masunsu, a 28-year-old Ugandan national, into custody. Masunsu faces charges in Massachusetts for two counts of assault and battery on a pregnant victim and destruction of property. The incident occurred on January 25 in Waltham.
Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, stated, “Not only is Gedion Masunsu in this country illegally, he savagely assaulted a pregnant Massachusetts resident, endangering the victim and her unborn child.” She emphasized that ICE is committed to maintaining public safety by arresting and removing alien offenders from communities.
Masunsu initially attempted to enter the United States at Boston Logan International Airport on April 14, 2021, using an expired visa. U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued him an order of expedited removal but paroled him into the country.
The Waltham Police Department arrested Masunsu on January 6 for the charges mentioned above. On the same day, ICE lodged an immigration detainer with the Waltham District Court; however, the court did not honor it and released Masunsu from custody.
Following his recent arrest by ICE, Masunsu remains in their custody.
