Christopher Wright, a 37-year-old resident of Albany, was apprehended and charged with possession of firearms as a felon. This development was announced by United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III, alongside Bryan Miller from the ATF's New York Field Division and Frank A. Tarentino III from the DEA's New York Field Division.
The criminal complaint states that Wright had seven firearms at his home, which included four pistols, a revolver, a rifle, and a shotgun. Additionally, ammunition and suspected narcotics were found. Wright's previous felony conviction in New York prohibits him from legally owning these weapons. One of the firearms had been reported stolen in July 2024. The charges are currently accusations, and Wright is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
If convicted, Wright could face up to 15 years in prison, fines reaching $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. Sentencing will depend on various factors including the specific statute violated and U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
Wright appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart in Albany today for an initial appearance and will remain detained until his detention hearing on March 25, 2025.
The investigation is being conducted by ATF and DEA with support from the Colonie Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Wentworth-Ping is leading the prosecution.
