A Rapid City man, Trevor Red Bird, has been sentenced to two years and nine months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler on March 17, 2025.
Red Bird, aged 36, will also serve five years of supervised release following his prison term and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2024 and pleaded guilty on January 8, 2025.
Previously convicted of abusive sexual contact in May 2008, Red Bird is required to register as a sex offender. He had prior convictions for failing to register in 2017, 2019, and 2022. After being released from prison in December 2023, he initially complied with registration requirements but failed to update his information after moving from his registered address in May 2024. This led to an arrest warrant and his subsequent arrest on October 5, 2024.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project coordinates resources from various levels of government to prosecute offenders and rescue victims.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuted the case.
Red Bird has been remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
