Scott Turner has been confirmed as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) by the United States Senate. The confirmation vote, which took place on February 5, 2025, saw Turner approved by a margin of 55-44. His nomination was supported by all 53 Senate Republicans and two Democrats, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Peter Welch of Vermont.
Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, expressed confidence in Turner's ability to make significant changes. "As HUD Secretary, Scott will make himself known. He will create access to quality, affordability housing…he will work to reverse decades of failed housing policies and make targeted reforms across all segments of the U.S. housing market."
Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) emphasized the importance of addressing the affordable housing crisis under Turner's leadership. "Our nation is facing an affordable housing crisis. Inflation, low inventory, and burdensome regulations have put access to housing and homeownership even further out of reach for hardworking Americans."
Turner takes over a department with a budget exceeding $68 billion that provides rental assistance and addresses homelessness among other responsibilities. During his confirmation hearing, he highlighted plans to tackle issues such as rising housing costs and homelessness.
In addition to his political career, Turner has experience as a former NFL player and a Dallas housing developer. He previously led the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council under President Trump.
The appointment has garnered support from various political figures and organizations who anticipate positive changes in HUD's policies under Turner's leadership.
