A man from Millinocket has been sentenced in Portland's U.S. District Court for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Jeffrey Barnard, aged 61, received a sentence of time served, approximately 22 months, followed by three years of supervised release. He entered a guilty plea on March 3, 2025.

Court documents reveal that in March 2023, an officer from the East Millinocket Police Department conducted a registration check on a vehicle and found it was registered to someone with a suspended driver's permit. Upon stopping the vehicle, an altercation occurred between the officer and the driver, identified as Jeffrey Barnard. He was arrested with help from another officer and a private citizen. During his arrest, officers discovered a .22 caliber revolver in his jacket pocket. Barnard is legally barred from owning firearms due to his criminal record, which includes a previous conviction in 2017 for being a felon in possession of a firearm after an armed standoff with police in Ellsworth.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation into this case with support from the East Millinocket Police Department.
