U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Cincinnati Port of Entry have seized six packages containing Artri King tablets, an unapproved drug prohibited by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The packages were intercepted over the past weekend.
The shipments originated from a single shipper in Mexico and were intended for a residence in California. The customs declaration on the parcels described the contents as “Nutritional Supplement Natural INGR.” Upon inspection, each package was found to contain 17,000 pills, totaling 102,000 pills with an estimated street value of $47,000.
LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, Director of Field Operations at the Chicago Field Office, commented on the seizure: “Most people hear about CBP seizing narcotics shipments. However, shipments of unapproved pills are very dangerous too. These pills are not regulated by the FDA and contain harmful chemicals which can lead to medical emergencies or even death.”
Artri King products are marketed for treating conditions such as arthritis and muscle pain but have been found to contain undeclared drug ingredients that can interact with other medications. Since January 5, 2022, when the FDA issued its first warning about Artri Ajo King products, there have been reports of adverse events including liver toxicity and death linked to these products.
The rise in e-commerce has increased foreign sellers' access to U.S. markets; however, they may lack necessary information to comply with U.S. laws regarding admissibility. Products manufactured abroad might not meet FDA standards required for consumer safety in terms of drug potency.
CBP is tasked with managing threats that evolve continuously while facilitating lawful trade and travel across U.S borders.
