Charleston man sentenced for illegal firearm possession as a felon

Ijaz Oliver, a 40-year-old from Charleston, has been sentenced to one year and six months in federal prison. The sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. Oliver was convicted for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a violation of federal law.

Court documents reveal that on August 28, 2023, Oliver possessed a Smith & Wesson model 36 .38-caliber revolver in Charleston. As a person with a previous felony conviction, Oliver was aware he was prohibited from possessing a firearm. His prior conviction was for conspiracy to distribute five grams or more of cocaine base in the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia, dated May 29, 2007.

The sentencing announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston. She acknowledged the investigative efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Charleston Police Department.

Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber delivered the sentence. The case prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe, along with former Assistant United States Attorney Troy D. Adams.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by uniting various levels of law enforcement and communities. The PSN, bolstered by a Department of Justice violent crime reduction strategy announced on May 26, 2021, promotes community trust, supports violence prevention organizations, and focuses on strategic enforcement priorities.
