A Venezuelan man, Abraham Gonzalez Romero, aged 23, faces charges for allegedly assaulting a federal officer. The incident occurred after Gonzalez Romero's unlawful entry into the United States near Eagle Pass, Texas, on approximately September 20, 2023. He made his initial appearance in a federal court in Denver today.
Court documents state that on February 28, 2025, ICE's Denver Fugitive Operations Unit and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) encountered Gonzalez Romero following his release from the Denver County jail. Officers with visible ICE badges approached him, at which point Gonzalez Romero attempted to flee by jumping over a handrail.
As officers chased him, Gonzalez Romero reportedly ran directly into an officer who was blocking his path. This collision caused the officer to fall backwards, resulting in both individuals hitting the ground. Gonzalez Romero was subsequently subdued and taken into custody by the officers.
The United States Attorney’s Office is overseeing the prosecution through its Violent Crimes and Immigration Enforcement Section. It should be noted that the charges filed in the complaint and indictment are allegations. Gonzalez Romero is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
