A man from Portland, Maine, has been sentenced in U.S. District Court for being a felon in possession of ammunition. Tyson Dyer, aged 38, received a sentence from U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen of 24 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
Court records indicate that in January 2023, Portland Police Department officers responded to a 911 call. The call reported two people smoking something in a vehicle and something being set on fire inside it. Upon arrival, officers found Dyer alone in the vehicle, which was registered to him. An empty black gun holster was visible on the front seat. After a search, officers discovered five loaded magazines on the seat, totaling 103 rounds. Dyer's previous convictions for drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession prohibited him from owning ammunition.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with help from the Portland Police Department.
This incident falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The Department of Justice initiated a violent crime reduction strategy on May 26, 2021, to enhance PSN. This strategy is rooted in building trust within communities, supporting community-based violence prevention organizations, establishing strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
