US to impose new visa restrictions over access to Tibet

The U.S. government is taking measures to implement additional visa restrictions on Chinese officials involved in policies that limit foreign access to Tibetan regions. These actions align with the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act of 2018.

The decision is a response to what is perceived as the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) ongoing refusal to grant U.S. diplomats, journalists, and international observers access to the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) and other Tibetan areas. In contrast, Chinese diplomats and journalists reportedly enjoy broad access in the United States. It has also been noted that U.S. diplomats face challenges in providing services to American citizens traveling in Tibet.

"This lack of reciprocity is unacceptable and will not be tolerated," states the official announcement. Chinese authorities are being urged to address these issues and allow unrestricted access for diplomats and others to the Tibetan regions.
