York County man faces charges for filing false tax returns in cryptocurrency scheme

The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania has announced charges against Waylon Wilcox, 45, from Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. Wilcox faces charges of filing false individual income tax returns as revealed in criminal information filed on March 28, 2025.

Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus detailed that Wilcox is charged with two counts related to incorrect tax filings. The filings show that Wilcox was involved in a complicated cryptocurrency scheme. It is alleged he sold shares worth over $7.4 million in 2021 and nearly $4.9 million in 2022, failing to report these gains on his tax returns.

According to the information, Wilcox filed a false return for the year 2021, reportedly underestimating his income by about $8,511,238, thereby reducing the tax owed by approximately $2,180,453. Similarly, for the year 2022, Wilcox allegedly underreported his income by around $4,599,532, resulting in a decrease in tax liability by roughly $1,098,623.

"IRS Criminal Investigation is committed to unraveling complex financial schemes involving virtual currencies and non-fungible token (NFT) transactions designed to conceal taxable income," stated Yury Kruty, Special Agent in Charge of the IRS Criminal Investigation's Philadelphia Field Office. "In today’s economic environment, it’s more important than ever that the American people feel confident that everyone is playing by the rules and paying the taxes they owe."

The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David C. Williams.
