U.S. Border Patrol agents were called to support the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) following a rollover crash near Gila Bend, Arizona. The incident involved a single vehicle with 14 individuals and occurred early Sunday morning.
The Ajo Station received a request for assistance shortly before 5 a.m. to the offramp of Interstate 8 and Butterfield Road. A van carrying the individuals had rolled over, prompting a response from multiple agents at the nearby state Route 85 immigration checkpoint.
Two emergency medical technicians from the Ajo Station were the first to reach the scene, providing immediate lifesaving care and preparing patients for medical transport. Additional agents managed traffic and established a safe landing area for life flight helicopters.
Out of the 14 individuals, 10 were transported via ground ambulance and three via life flights. One individual was declared dead at the scene.
“The men and women of the Border Patrol will do anything in their power to help those in need,” said Tucson Sector Chief Sean McGoffin. “We know all too well that every second counts. The quick actions our agents take every day can be the difference maker in life-or-death situations.”
AZDPS confirmed that there were no law enforcement officers present during the accident, nor was any pursuit underway. Border Patrol agents were specifically requested to assist with medical support and traffic control.
