Arizona man sentenced to prison for mailing fentanyl to Iowa

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A man involved in distributing fentanyl from Arizona to Iowa received a significant federal prison sentence. Shawn Javier Lopez-Johnson, a 29-year-old resident of Phoenix, Arizona, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison. He pleaded guilty on November 1, 2024, to a charge of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

The criminal activities took place from March 2023 to December 2023. During this period, Lopez-Johnson sent numerous packages containing controlled substances. These shipments included hundreds of fentanyl pills, fentanyl powder, and methamphetamine to Dubuque, Iowa. The drugs were intended for re-distribution by his co-conspirator, Alexander John Chapman, who had received his sentencing earlier for his involvement in the scheme.

The drugs sent by Lopez-Johnson were valued at approximately $5,400. This case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and distribution at the federal level.
