The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa will observe National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) from April 6 to April 12, 2025. The theme for this year is "Connecting Healing," emphasizing the importance of connections for victim services and healing.
Events in Iowa will be held throughout the week, including the 2025 National Crime Victims' Rights Week Commemoration in Des Moines, a 5K Run/Walk in Marion, and other related activities at the Des Moines Area Community College.
United States Attorney Timothy T. Duax announced awards recognizing exceptional service to crime victims. The Law Enforcement Victim Services Award was given to two officers: Investigator Tracy Johnson from the Cedar Rapids Police Department and Detective Chris Thomas from the Sioux City Police Department.
Investigator Johnson is honored for her work on a human trafficking case involving a minor. Through a victim-centered approach, Johnson built trust with the victim, aiding in the conviction of Jarod Anderson, who awaits sentencing after being found guilty. Tana Torres, also involved, pled guilty and received up to eight years in prison.
Detective Thomas was recognized for his efforts in a kidnapping case involving Bobby Ray Rhoden. Thomas's persistence earned the victim's trust, leading her to testify at trial, where Rhoden was found guilty. He is scheduled for sentencing on May 2, 2025.
The awards highlight the commitment of law enforcement officers in providing support and justice for crime victims, showcasing their dedication to creating a safer community through empathy and determination.
