Talihina man sentenced to 23 months for illegal firearm possession

Jerad Daniel Abbott, a 39-year-old resident of Talihina, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 23 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition illegally. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma made the announcement regarding Abbott’s conviction.

The investigation was conducted by the Latimer County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Abbott entered a guilty plea on October 15, 2024, admitting to being in possession of a 9mm Luger caliber semi-automatic pistol and corresponding ammunition on May 4, 2023. At the time, he had a prior conviction for a crime with a possible imprisonment term exceeding one year.

This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence nationwide by fostering collaboration among law enforcement agencies and community members. The program's strategy, updated in May 2021, emphasizes building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and evaluating outcomes.

The sentencing was overseen by Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Abbott will be held by the U.S. Marshals Service until he is transferred to a designated prison facility to serve his sentence. He will not be eligible for parole during this period.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jarrod A. Leaman and Edith A. Singer.
