Bryan County residents plead guilty in illegal firearms acquisition scheme

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma has reported that two residents from Calera, Bryan County, have pleaded guilty to charges related to a scheme to buy and sell firearms illegally. Rebecca Leann Hughes, 33, admitted guilt to conspiring to acquire a firearm from a licensed dealer by making a false statement. This offense carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

Nathanial Louis Hughes, 31, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, which could result in a prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of up to $250,000.

The indictment accused Rebecca Hughes of conspiring to purchase firearms unlawfully from a licensed dealer from June 26 to July 21, 2024. She admitted to falsely indicating she was the actual buyer on ATF Form 4473, with the intention of purchasing firearms for her husband, Nathanial Hughes, who is a convicted felon.

Nathanial Hughes was accused of possessing multiple firearms unlawfully on July 21, 2024, despite a previous conviction that led to a prison term exceeding one year.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jason A. Robertson accepted the plea agreement and has ordered a presentence investigation report. The Hughes were released on bond and await sentencing, which will be influenced by the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory considerations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael E.
