Sallisaw resident sentenced for felon in possession of ammunition

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced a sentence for Devon Ray Gillispie, a resident of Sallisaw, Oklahoma. At 33 years of age, Gillispie has been sentenced to 77 months in prison on a charge of being a felon in possession of ammunition.

The sentence stems from an investigation conducted by the Sallisaw Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Gillispie pleaded guilty to the charge on October 15, 2024. According to law enforcement reports, on January 31, 2022, officers found Gillispie in possession of 42 rounds of ammunition despite his previous conviction for a crime that carried a potential sentence of more than one year.

This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement and community resources. Since May 26, 2021, a revised strategy was implemented to bolster PSN efforts by enhancing trust within communities, supporting violence prevention programs, refining enforcement priorities, and assessing outcomes.

The sentencing was handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Gillispie will continue in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service while awaiting transfer to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility. The sentence is non-paroleable.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan E. Soverly represented the United States in this case.
