A Georgia woman has admitted to smuggling firearms into Mexico following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with support from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The incident was reported on April 3, 2025, following legal proceedings on April 1.
The plea stems from events on December 15, 2024, where authorities monitored 38-year-old Mirna Luna attempting to cross the Brownsville/Matamoros port of entry. During a secondary inspection, officials discovered 17 firearms along with 27 magazines clandestinely concealed in the gas tank of Luna’s Nissan vehicle. Luna claimed ownership and affirmed she was the sole driver. She failed to possess or apply for a firearms export license.
The case was presented to U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr., who accepted Luna's guilty plea. Sentencing is scheduled for July 8, where Luna is subject to a potential maximum prison term of ten years and a fine up to $250,000. She remains in custody until sentencing.
Prosecution is led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jose Esquivel and Ana Cano from the Southern District of Texas.
