John Calvin Moore, a 58-year-old from North Carolina, was sentenced to 84 months in federal prison following charges related to drug possession and firearm offenses. The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester.
The case began on December 22, 2023, when Moore's vehicle was stopped for speeding by an Oklahoma City Police Department (OCPD) officer on Interstate 40. During the stop, officers discovered apparent Christmas presents in the trunk. Moore claimed he was traveling from California back to North Carolina, despite the rental vehicle being due for return in Ontario, California, the next day. A K-9 unit was called, which signaled the presence of narcotics. Upon searching, officers found over 42 pounds of methamphetamine and 38 pounds of cocaine concealed in the presents. The drugs were estimated to exceed $350,000 in street value.
Moore was subsequently charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm through a Superseding Information on August 30, 2024. On September 26, 2024, he acknowledged these charges, admitting to the possession of drugs for distribution and illegal firearm possession due to his prior felony conviction in New Jersey for possessing weapons unlawfully.
During the sentencing on March 28, 2025, U.S. District Judge Charles Goodwin handed Moore his sentence, which includes four years of supervised release after his prison term. The court highlighted the gravity of Moore's actions as a drug courier and his criminal past.
The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the FBI's Oklahoma City Field Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Central Oklahoma Criminal Interdiction Team, and the OCPD. Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew E. Davis prosecuted the case.
