A Rapid City man has been sentenced to nine months in federal prison for assaulting his child's mother. U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler handed down the sentence on March 31, 2025, following Jared Red Cloud's conviction on two counts of Assault Resulting in Substantial Bodily Injury to an Intimate Partner. In addition to prison time, Red Cloud, 24, will serve three years of supervised release for each count, which will run concurrently. He must also pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The conviction follows Red Cloud’s indictment by a federal grand jury in August 2024 for Assault Resulting in Substantial Bodily Injury to an Intimate Partner and Assault by Strangulation and Suffocation. He pleaded guilty on January 21, 2025. The sentencing reflects an observed pattern of violence against the mother of his child, which authorities have noted had occurred in 2021 and 2024. "The district court cited the pattern of abuse in the relationship in denying Red Cloud’s request for probation or time served and imposed a nine-month sentence," stated the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Domestic violence can manifest in various forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, economic, psychological, or technological threats or coercive actions. The Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women and local law enforcement offer resources to address such issues.
The case was pursued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office under the Major Crimes Act, requiring that certain violent crimes in Indian Country be prosecuted federally. The investigation was conducted by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division, with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Lindrooth. Following the sentence, Red Cloud was placed in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
