Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A Charles City resident has been sentenced to a federal prison term for illegal firearm possession. Dashaune Terrell Burns-Johnson, a 32-year-old from Iowa, received a sentence of 57 months after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm as a prohibited person. The plea was entered on October 23, 2024.

Evidence presented during the sentencing revealed that Burns-Johnson, on May 22, 2024, had brought both drugs and a loaded firearm to a neighbor's house. He proceeded to remove the firearm from his backpack and pointed it at a person in the house. Previously, Burns-Johnson had felony and misdemeanor convictions related to domestic abuse assault.

The sentencing took place in Cedar Rapids, delivered by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand. In addition to the prison term, Burns-Johnson will undergo a three-year period of supervised release. It is noted that the federal system does not allow for parole. Currently, Burns-Johnson is detained under the United States Marshal's custody, awaiting transfer to a federal prison.
