Montgomery man sentenced to over nine years for robbing two stores

Kevin P. Davidson, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama

On April 10, 2025, Jalen Lamarcus Gunn, age 21, received a sentence of 111 months in federal prison for robbery and firearm charges, as declared by Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson. Following his prison time, Gunn will undergo three years of supervised release, with no parole available in the federal system.

Gunn, originally from Montgomery, Alabama, admitted to robbing two convenience stores in April 2024. On April 27, Gunn jumped over the counter at a store on Wares Ferry Road, brandishing a firearm at the clerk and demanding money. He fled with around $3,000. Two days later, Gunn executed a similar robbery at a Perry Hill Road store, taking $2,500 and multiple cigarette packs at gunpoint. He pleaded guilty on November 8, 2024, to two counts of interference with interstate commerce by robbery and one count of firearm brandishing during a federal crime of violence.

This case is part of the Middle District of Alabama’s Violent Offender Intervention and Deterrence (VOID) program, launched in March 2024. The VOID program seeks to curb violent crime through coordinated efforts with local and federal enforcement agencies, prioritizing violent crime cases and building strategic cases against gangs and repeat offenders.

Acting U.S. Attorney Davidson stated, “Prosecuting individuals who endanger innocent lives through armed robbery and other violent crimes is the very reason my office started the VOID program." He added, "Jalen Gunn traumatized his victims by threatening them with a gun pointed at their heads, an act of pure intimidation and violence. This prosecution should send a clear warning: if you choose to terrorize our communities with guns, you will be held accountable."

FBI Special Agent in Charge Rachel A. Byrd commented on the case, stating, “This type of behavior has to stop, and the men and women of the FBI, along with our partners in law enforcement, are dedicated to tracking down the individuals who continuously victimize their own communities. This sentence should send a clear message to those who refuse to obey the law.”

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Montgomery Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Christopher P. Moore leading the prosecution.
