A man from Columbus, Ohio, Angelo Dre Clifton, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for drug trafficking that resulted in an overdose death. The sentence was handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge David Bunning. Clifton faced charges for distributing fentanyl that led to the death of a victim in Boyd County, Kentucky.
In June 2019, law enforcement responded to a report of an unresponsive victim. When officers arrived, the victim was declared dead, and it was later determined that the cause of death was a fentanyl overdose. A search of the victim's phone revealed messages between the victim and Clifton regarding the purchase of controlled substances.
Clifton, during his plea agreement, admitted awareness of the victim overdosing on drugs supplied by him. He also acknowledged that, from May 2019 through June 2019, he regularly distributed heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine in the Eastern District of Kentucky.
Under federal law, Clifton is required to serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for release. Upon release, he will be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for a period of six years.
The sentence was announced by Paul McCaffrey, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Jim Scott, Special Agent in Charge at the DEA, Louisville Field Division; and Sheriff Jamie Reihs of the Boyd County Sheriff's Office. The investigation was a joint effort by the DEA and the Boyd County Sheriff's Office.
