Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa
Lawrence Moore, a 37-year-old resident of Bode, Iowa, admitted guilt in federal court in Sioux City to the charge of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Moore's prior convictions in Cook County, Illinois, which include armed robbery and aggravated battery, prevent him from legally possessing firearms or ammunition.
During the plea hearing, evidence was presented revealing Moore's involvement in firearms negotiations. In the fall of 2024, Moore was caught communicating with an undercover agent, attempting to acquire or trade a firearm. A search warrant on November 18, 2024, led to the discovery of a Smith & Wesson Model 59 semi-automatic pistol at Moore's residence. The firearm, fully loaded, was concealed inside a mattress in the bedroom Moore shared with his wife. Additionally, authorities seized marijuana and related paraphernalia from the property.
Moore is currently held by the United States Marshal and awaits sentencing by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand following a presentence report. He could face a maximum sentence of 15 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release after serving any term.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Strengthened in May 2021, the program focuses on building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and measuring outcomes.
