A Massachusetts man, described in court as a "kilo weight dealer" of cocaine, has been sentenced nearly six years in federal prison. Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom confirmed the sentencing.
Juan Betancourt Sosa, aged 29, pleaded guilty on October 16, 2024, to a charge of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. U.S. District Court Judge Mary S. McElroy sentenced him to 70 months of incarceration, followed by four years of federal supervised release.
According to court documents, Betancourt admitted to being a cocaine supplier for a Rhode Island-based conspiracy involved in trafficking crack cocaine and fentanyl. The court was informed that Betancourt supplied at least six kilograms of cocaine to an individual who passed the drugs to the conspiracy leader. At his arrest, authorities discovered two kilos of cocaine in the trunk of a car Betancourt was using.
Assistant United States Attorney Stacey A. Erickson prosecuted the case. It was investigated by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, the DEA, and the Providence Police Department, with assistance from the United States Postal Inspection Service and East Providence Police Department.
