Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono to discuss crucial strategic interests between the two nations. The meeting reaffirmed the significance of the U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. Discussions focused on enhancing defense and security cooperation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea in line with international law.
Secretary Rubio raised the issue of the maximum pressure campaign directed at the Iranian regime. This campaign aims to limit Iran's revenue streams used to finance terrorism, missile production, and other destabilizing actions globally.
Additionally, the meeting addressed U.S. reciprocal tariffs on Indonesia. Secretary Rubio praised Indonesia's efforts to implement economic reforms for achieving a balanced trade relationship. He also expressed gratitude for Indonesia's assistance in facilitating the return of deportees from the United States. Both leaders acknowledged the necessity of further expanding the partnership between their countries.
