U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Chicago have seized three shipments containing the sedative Xylazine. The seizures took place on April 12 at an air cargo facility in Chicago. The packages, arriving from China, were addressed to three separate residences—one in Cleveland, Ohio, and two in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

CBP officers examined the packages as the contents were suspect, containing unknown powders that required further testing. Using a handheld elemental isotype analysis tool, officers identified the substance as Xylazine. Veterinarians often use Xylazine as a sedative for large animals, but it is increasingly found mixed with opioids like fentanyl and heroin, posing severe risks. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have warned about the dangers of Xylazine, which, unlike opioids, does not respond to Narcan and has no known antidote for overdoses.

The Director of Field Operation at the Chicago field Office, LaFonda Sutton-Burke, praised the officers' efforts, stating, "The work of our officers has been incredible and their dedication to CBP's enforcement mission is evident when you look at these deadly illicit substance seizures."

CBP officers are tasked with securing 328 ports of entry, working continuously to intercept illegal substances and protect communities. The agency, as the largest federal law enforcement body in the United States, is committed to ensuring the safety and economic prosperity of the nation.
