The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has announced that over $700 million in federal daily payments are now subject to increased scrutiny by agency officials. Recipients are being asked to justify these payments, as said in an announcement made via X on April 12.
According to DOGE's post, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is collaborating with agency officials and payment recipients to closely monitor these transactions. For the first time, the public will have access to detailed, line-by-line descriptions and explanations for each payment on the DOGE website, a move intended to enhance transparency and accountability in federal spending.
On March 9, 2025, DOGE revealed on X that the Program Support Center within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services processes significant grant payments—approximately $215 billion annually or $860 million each business day. Until now, there was minimal accountability within this system. Payments were issued without requiring grantees to provide documentation or receipts if they withdrew funds directly. Similarly, no justification or paperwork was necessary when a government agency approved the payments. However, starting from the week of March 9, grantees must include a brief justification for their intended use of funds, and agencies approving payments must also provide justification.
