U.S. imposes visa restrictions on over 250 Nicaraguan officials

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The United States has announced visa restrictions on more than 250 officials linked to the Nicaraguan government. This measure extends the restrictions previously applied to over 2,000 individuals under the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. The U.S. government has taken these actions as part of a continuing response to what it describes as the Nicaraguan government's actions that "deprived the Nicaraguan people of their fundamental freedoms and forced so many into exile."

As the seven-year mark of the Ortega and Murillo regime’s measures against protestors approaches, the United States reflects on the protestors' aspirations for a free Nicaragua. The U.S. remains firm against what it perceives as ongoing violations by the regime.

This initiative is aligned with Presidential Proclamation 10309, which targets those associated with the Nicaraguan government or individuals who contribute to policies undermining democratic processes. The proclamation suspends their entry to the United States as both immigrants and nonimmigrants. For further inquiries, individuals are directed to contact WHA-PDA-Press@state.gov.
