WASHINGTON, April 17, 2025 — The American Petroleum Institute (API) has filed a motion to intervene in federal court. This legal action aims to support President Trump's decision to revoke the previous administration's ban on new oil and natural gas leasing across millions of acres of federal waters. The move is a response to a lawsuit from activists opposing the reversal of the ban.
Ryan Meyers, API Senior Vice President and General Counsel, said, "This lawsuit is out of touch with the majority of American voters who sent a clear message in support of domestic energy development." He added that API is acting to defend the reversal and ensure offshore resources remain vital for affordable energy and government revenue.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that offshore production contributes 14% of total U.S. crude oil production, nearly 2 million barrels per day. Offshore development could potentially generate over $8 billion in additional government revenue by 2040.
Offshore resources are also noted for producing some of the lowest carbon-intensive barrels globally.
API represents all segments of America's natural gas and oil industry, supporting nearly 11 million jobs. It comprises approximately 600 members involved in producing, processing, and distributing energy. API was established in 1919 as a standards-setting organization and has developed over 800 standards for safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
