Grove woman sentenced for voluntary manslaughter in Indian Country

Clinton J. Johnson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma

Kellie Lee Crawford, a 57-year-old Grove resident, received a sentence today of 180 months in prison for the voluntary manslaughter of her 70-year-old neighbor, Richard Strade. This decision was made by U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell. Following her prison term, Crawford will face three years of supervised release.

The tragic incident took place in September 2021. Crawford was under the influence of methamphetamine while drinking with Strade, leading her to mistakenly believe that he was trying to sexually assault her. In her altered state, she admitted to hitting Strade with a cookie jar lid and a plastic hanger before ultimately strangling him.

Crawford is a member of the Potawatomi Nation and will remain in custody until she is transferred to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

This case was investigated by the FBI, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations, and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacey Todd handling the prosecution.
