Trump administration freezes funds over alleged civil rights violations at Harvard

The Department of Education's Joint Taskforce to Combat Antisemitism took significant action against Harvard University by freezing $2.2 billion in multi-year grants and $60 million in contracts. This decision followed Harvard's rejection of a settlement proposal from the Department of Education on April 11. The proposal aimed to address concerns about the university's handling of civil rights and safety for Jewish students during a campus antisemitism crisis last year.

The America First Policy Institute (AFPI) responded with a statement from Chris Schorr, Ph.D., Director of AFPI’s Higher Education Reform Initiative. Schorr criticized Harvard for its failure to protect Jewish students, stating: "Last year, Harvard University failed to protect Jewish students from violence, harassment, and intimidation—contrary to its obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act (1964)."

Schorr further alleged that Harvard has shown a pattern of disregarding civil rights obligations, including racial discrimination in hiring and promotions, tolerating academic plagiarism, suppressing free expression, and fostering a biased viewpoint monoculture. He remarked on what he perceives as Harvard's belief in its immunity due to its elite status: "Harvard’s leaders evidently believe their institution’s ‘elite’ status renders it unaccountable to American law; however, the Trump Administration sees things differently and is rightfully holding them accountable."
