Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A man from Mexico who reentered the United States illegally after deportation was sentenced to federal prison today. Jose Solis-Alvarado, aged 34, was sentenced to over two months in jail following his guilty plea on March 10, 2025, for unlawfully returning to the U.S. after deportation.

Solis-Alvarado admitted to reentering the country without the necessary government permission after his deportation in 2010. On February 4, 2025, immigration officials discovered his illegal return when he was found at Benton County Jail, following an arrest on state charges for operating while under the influence.

Chief Judge C.J. Williams of the United States District Court sentenced Solis-Alvarado in Cedar Rapids to 85 days imprisonment. Following his sentence, he is required to serve a one-year term of supervised release. The federal system does not have a provision for parole.

Solis-Alvarado remains in U.S. Marshal’s custody until he can be handed over to immigration authorities.

The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Vander Stoep, and the investigation was conducted by the Enforcement and Removal Operations of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
