Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced the sentencing of Destane Glass, aged 24, from Shreveport, in a federal bank fraud case. Glass received a 135-month prison sentence from United States District Judge S. Maurice Hicks, Jr., with an additional requirement to pay restitution amounting to $539,578. This sentence will run consecutively with her existing 37-month sentence for Payment Protection Program fraud, bringing her total prison term to 172 months.
The court evidence disclosed that between January 1, 2021, and October 31, 2022, Glass and her accomplices carried out bank fraud against USAA Savings Bank, Navy Federal Credit Union, and JP Morgan Chase Bank. Glass led the conspiracy, directing and recruiting others to join the scheme. In April 2024, Glass and 20 other individuals were indicted for their roles in this bank fraud conspiracy.
USAA Bank, insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, was among the defrauded institutions. The bank's customer service operations in Shreveport were managed by Teleperformance, whose employees had access to customer data. Although Glass was not affiliated with Teleperformance, she conspired with employees to access and exploit USAA Bank's customer information.
Glass allegedly targeted elderly customers with substantial account balances, generating $2,149,621 of counterfeit USAA Bank checks from affected accounts. She recruited Shreveport residents to use their bank accounts for depositing these counterfeit checks. Once deposited, Glass and her accomplices withdrew funds, including from local casinos, sharing the proceeds amongst themselves.
Another involved individual, ZarRajah Z. Watkins, 23, also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 37 months with a restitution order of $397,930. All other defendants in this case have pled guilty and received their respective sentences.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Louisiana State Police, and Shreveport Police Department. Alexander C. Van Hook prosecuted the case.
