U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in collaboration with multiple law enforcement agencies, conducted a significant statewide operation in Florida from April 21 to April 26, resulting in the arrest of 1,120 criminal illegal aliens. This operation marked the largest of its kind in a single state within a week in ICE’s history. Of those arrested, 63% had prior criminal arrests or convictions.
The arrests included 378 individuals with final orders of removal issued by immigration judges. Various offenders such as gang members, sex offenders, and those considered public safety threats were among those taken into custody. Charged individuals were reportedly linked to violent gangs, including MS-13 and Surenos.
The arrestees hailed from various countries, with 437 from Guatemala and 280 from Mexico. ICE operations also netted individuals from Central and South American countries, including Honduras and Venezuela.
“Last week’s operational success of arresting more than 1,100 criminal illegal aliens was truly a collaborative whole-of-government effort by our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners in Florida,” stated ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan.
Florida's collaboration with federal agencies has been emphasized, particularly through its 287(g) partnerships, which permit local law enforcement to perform specified immigration functions under ICE’s guidance.
Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida, remarked, “I’ve insisted that Florida be the tip of the spear when it comes to state support of federal immigration enforcement. The success of Operation Tidal Wave is proof of our commitment."
Miami Sector Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey Dinise commented on the operational collaboration, asserting the importance of cooperative enforcement in confronting risks to national security.
The operation involved federal, state, and local agencies, with significant resources deployed in identifying and prioritizing targets. Sheriff's offices across Florida, from Alachua to Volusia County, contributed to the operation.
Several high-profile arrests occurred, including Ciro Ramon Castaneda Perez from Venezuela, an MS-13 member Rafael Juarez Cabrera from Guatemala, and known gang affiliates from other countries. These individuals faced charges ranging from illegal reentry to violent crimes.
The ICE operation aims to enhance national security and immigration law enforcement while removing individuals seen as threats to public safety.
ICE continues to urge the public to report suspicious activities through their hotline.
