The American Petroleum Institute (API) has expressed support for the Department of Justice's (DOJ) recent legal actions against state-level legislation in New York and Vermont. The DOJ filed complaints challenging several state lawsuits and laws, including 'climate superfund' legislation, which API views as detrimental to the energy sector.
Ryan Meyers, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at API, said, "The Trump Administration gets it. This cadre of state lawsuits and laws is not only an attack on the companies that provide Americans with affordable and reliable energy, but also an unconstitutional affront to the federal government’s role in setting national energy and climate policy. We thank the Department of Justice for their bold action in taking on this activist-driven state overreach."
This move by the DOJ follows an Executive Order issued by President Trump on April 8. The order instructed the Attorney General to review state and local regulations that may be unconstitutional due to their impact on domestic energy development. The President described such policies as conflicting with his administration's goal to promote American energy.
Previously, API joined forces with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in filing lawsuits against both states on similar grounds. API represents various segments of America's natural gas and oil industry, which supports nearly 11 million jobs across the country.
