U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has finalized a grant agreement enabling the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to commence work on the I-10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Multimodal Project. The $550 million project is part of the Federal Highway Administration's Bridge Investment Program, marking it as the largest grant delivered by the Trump Administration so far.

"America is building again," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. "President Trump vowed to get Alabama the infrastructure it deserves, and since assuming office, my department has worked diligently over the last 100 days to make it happen."

The initiative comes amid criticisms from U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville regarding previous funding priorities under President Biden's administration. "For four years, the Biden administration prioritized funding woke, climate initiatives while our roads and bridges collapsed across the country," he stated.

U.S. Senator Katie Britt expressed gratitude for federal support: "This $550 million investment in the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project is a huge win for Alabamians." She acknowledged local leaders' roles in securing this competitive grant.

U.S. Representative Barry Moore emphasized its significance beyond Alabama: "The Mobile River and Bayway Bridge Project is a critical infrastructure need that has far-reaching effects."

The Trump Administration inherited an unprecedented backlog of unobligated grants from previous administrations, delaying vital community investments nationwide. Under Secretary Duffy’s leadership, efforts are underway to expedite fund distribution by removing certain requirements deemed unnecessary.

The ALDOT project will include constructing a new six-lane bridge over the Mobile River navigational channel and replacing existing Bayway Bridges crossing Mobile Bay with structures raised above hurricane storm surge levels. Estimated at $3.7 billion overall, this development spans over 10 miles along I-10.
