Migrant dies from environmental exposure in Dimmit County

On September 20, 2024, a distress call was made to the Dimmit County 911 center at around 4:08 a.m. The caller reported being lost and requested help for another individual who was convulsing and unresponsive. The incident occurred near Carrizo Springs, Texas.

The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) Del Rio Sector Operations Center was informed by the Dimmit County 911 personnel at approximately 4:13 a.m., with emergency medical services set to be dispatched after Border Patrol Agents confirmed the location. By around 4:35 a.m., agents located the caller and the man in distress about 43.6 miles southeast of Eagle Pass Port of Entry and roughly 17 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

The agents suspected heat stroke as the cause of distress and applied ice packs while awaiting medical assistance. A Border Patrol Agent who is also an emergency medical technician arrived at approximately 4:54 a.m., provided aid, and established an intravenous line by about 5:09 a.m.

With EMS still en route at around 5:15 a.m., agents transported the man toward them, meeting on Faith Ranch Road at approximately 5:29 a.m., where he was transferred to an ambulance for further care.

The man was taken to Dimmit Regional Hospital, arriving at approximately 6:03 a.m., before being transferred later that day to Methodist Hospital Metropolitan in San Antonio for advanced care. Despite efforts, he passed away on October 1, as informed by medical personnel on October 4.

An autopsy will not be conducted since death occurred under medical supervision. The Customs and Border Protection's Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing this case, with notification sent to the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General.
