Jerry Tyree, a 46-year-old resident of Washington D.C., has been sentenced to 18 and a half years in prison for his involvement in a shooting incident that occurred on November 29, 2023. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.
In September 2024, Tyree was found guilty by a D.C. Superior Court jury on multiple charges including aggravated assault while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, unlawful possession of firearms with prior convictions, and attempted possession of liquid PCP. Following his prison sentence, Tyree will also serve eight years under supervised release.
The government's evidence revealed that on the day of the incident, Tyree met the victim near Eastern Avenue NE and Foote Street NE shortly before 2:00 p.m. They engaged in a consensual sexual encounter after which Tyree accused the victim of robbery. When the victim denied this accusation, Tyree shot them in the genitals with a small silver handgun before fleeing the scene. The police were alerted by a neighbor and the victim required multiple surgeries following hospitalization.
Tyree was arrested nearly a month later on December 30, 2023, less than a mile from where the shooting took place. At that time he was found with the same handgun used in the crime and several vials containing suspected PCP. Identification procedures along with ballistics and DNA evidence linked him to the shooting incident.
U.S. Attorney Martin and Chief Smith commended both law enforcement personnel from the Metropolitan Police Department who investigated this case as well as those involved from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Special recognition was given to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anthony Cocuzza and Daniel Bromwich for their roles in investigating and prosecuting Jerry Tyree's case.
