The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to consumers, tattoo artists, and retailers regarding the use or sale of certain Sacred Tattoo Ink products found to be contaminated with harmful microorganisms. The specific inks identified are "Sacred Tattoo Ink, Raven Black; CI# 77266; Lot#: RB0624; Best Before: June 28 2027" and "Sacred Tattoo Ink, Sunny Daze; CI# 21095; Lot#: SD1124; Best Before: Nov 1 2027."
According to the FDA's laboratory analysis, these tattoo inks are contaminated with bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The presence of pathogenic microorganisms in tattoo inks poses a risk of infection when injected into the skin during tattooing procedures. Infections can lead to serious health injuries due to the increased risk associated with breaking the skin barrier.
Symptoms commonly reported from infections related to contaminated tattoo ink include rashes or lesions made up of red papules in areas where the ink was applied. Some infections may cause permanent scarring. Recognizing signs of an infection can be challenging as they may resemble other conditions like allergic reactions, potentially leading to misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment.
The FDA became aware of these contaminated products through routine surveys and microbiological analysis of marketed tattoo inks. Two specific inks were found to contain bacteria harmful to human health using methods described in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual Chapter 23: Microbiological Methods for Cosmetics.
Consumers are advised to inquire about the inks used by their tattoo artist or studio and avoid those listed above due to potential risks. Similarly, tattoo artists and retailers should refrain from using or selling these products.
The FDA is actively working with manufacturers and retailers to ensure that contaminated products are removed from circulation. Health care professionals and consumers who experience adverse health effects are encouraged to report them via the FDA's SmartHub.
