Madison man indicted for trafficking methamphetamine and fentanyl

Timothy M. O’Shea, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, has announced the unsealing of an indictment against Jonathan E. Conley, a 43-year-old resident of Madison, Wisconsin. Conley is charged with distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl and possessing these substances with intent to distribute.

The indictment specifies that on October 24, 2023, Conley allegedly distributed fentanyl and over 50 grams of methamphetamine. Additionally, it claims that on February 7, 2024, he possessed more than 50 grams of methamphetamine and over 40 grams of fentanyl for distribution purposes. A federal grand jury in Madison returned this indictment on April 2, 2025.

Conley was arrested in Dane County and made his initial appearance in federal court today. He is currently detained pending a detention hearing scheduled for Friday, May 9.

If found guilty of distributing or possessing more than the specified amounts of methamphetamine or fentanyl, Conley faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and could receive up to forty years in prison. For other charges related to lesser quantities, he could face up to twenty years imprisonment.

The investigation leading to these charges was conducted by several agencies: the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), New Lisbon Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven P. Anderson is prosecuting the case.

It is important to note that a charge is merely an accusation; Conley remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
