Today, U.S. District Judge Julie R. Rubin sentenced William Joseph Murrow, a former resident of Frederick County, Maryland, to 25 years in prison for the sexual exploitation of a child. Upon his release, Murrow is required to register as a sex offender for life and will be under supervised release for 20 years.

The sentence was announced by Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, along with Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno of the FBI Baltimore Field Office; J. Charles Smith, State’s Attorney for Frederick County; and Chief Jason Lando of the Frederick Police Department.

Court documents revealed that Murrow engaged in sexual abuse and exploitation of a minor by soliciting images and performing sexual acts over an 18-month period. The abuse came to light when the child's mother reported it to authorities.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to address child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program coordinates efforts from federal, state, and local agencies to prosecute offenders and rescue victims. More information about Project Safe Childhood can be found at www.justice.gov/psc.

U.S. Attorney Hayes praised the work of the FBI, Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office, Frederick Police Department, and Brunswick Police Department in their investigation efforts. She also acknowledged Assistant U.S. Attorney Colleen Elizabeth McGuinn and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Joyce R. King for prosecuting the case.
